DUTIES

Help get people registered to vote by providing registration applications, allowing the citizen to fill out the application, and bringing the completed applications back to the appropriate county elections office (typically within 5 days or sooner, depending on how close to an election it is).

PROCESS

Contact your county Elections Department to make an appointment for a brief training and to fill out an Application and Certificate of Appointment to become deputized. You will receive some voter registration applications and information to take with you. The whole process generally takes just 15 minutes.

TRAINING

In order to speed up the training process, you may view the training manual prescribed by the Secretary of State.

Learn more from the Texas Volunteer Deputy Registrar Guide, which provides helpful details about the process for getting deputized and how to carry out registrar duties. If you don’t have internet access, call the Texas Secretary of State at 1.800.252.VOTE (8683) to obtain deputy registrar information.

Where do I go to Become a Registrar?

Ready to get deputized as a volunteer registrar? That’s great news!

The first step is to contact your county elections office to find out your county’s process for deputizing volunteer registrars—such as deputizing hours, when registrar trainings are, and what you need to bring to prove eligibility requirements. Once you’re deputized, your county office will also equip you with voter registration applications and registrar info to help you register voters.

For your convenience, we’ve provided county election office information for the major North Texas Counties. Each office will have its own set of practices for deputizing registrars, so be sure to contact them about what days you can come in to get deputized and for any other county-specific rules they may have.

If your county’s not listed below, visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program or USA.gov to get contact info for your county elections office, no matter where you live in the U.S. Texans can use the Texas Secretary of State Office to find their county elections office.*
