About Dr. Joseph

Dr. Joseph describes his career focus as “Black Power Studies,” encompassing interdisciplinary fields of Africana studies, law and society, women’s and ethnic studies, and political science.

Dr. Joseph’s work has appeared in The Journal of American History, The Chronicle Review, The New York Times, The Black Scholar, Souls, American Historical Review, Newsweek, TheRoot, Reuters, and The Washington Post. Dr. Joseph has served as a commentator on National Public Radio, The Colbert Report, PBS, and MSNBC, and has authored award-winning books, Waiting ‘Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America, Dark Days, Bright Nights: From Black Power to Barack Obama, and Stokely: A Life. He recently published The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X. and Martin Luther King Jr.
